WHAT DO ELEVATOR CONSTRUCTORS DO?The IUEC stands as the representative of the most highly skilled and proficient elevator constructors on a global scale. Our members specialize in the assembly, installation, and replacement of elevators, escalators, dumbwaiters, moving walkways, and related equipment in both newly constructed and existing buildings. Beyond installation, elevator constructors are dedicated to the ongoing maintenance and repair of this equipment once it is in operation. Additionally, we excel in the modernization of older equipment, ensuring it remains reliable and up-to-date. What is the ELEVATOR CONSTRUCTORS’ APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM?Elevator Constructor apprentices are registered with the National Elevator Industry Education Program (NEIEP). This program of study entails a five-year commitment, culminating in the opportunity to sit for the Mechanic's examination. HOW MUCH WILL I EARN?Your earnings as an apprentice in the Elevator Constructors union are dynamic and directly tied to your learning and experience in the trade. The union negotiates wages and fringe benefits through collective bargaining with signatory contractors on behalf of union journeymen Elevator Constructors. Wage levels may differ depending on the geographic location of the local union. For probationary apprentices, the starting wage is typically set at 50% of the journeyman's wage rate. First-year apprentices typically receive 55% of the journeyman's wage rate, in addition to fringe benefits. As you progress and your skills and knowledge of the trade expand, your earnings are adjusted annually to reflect your increasing proficiency and expertise in the field. It's important to note that some apprenticeship programs may also collaborate with community colleges to provide college credit for apprenticeship classes, adding further value to your learning experience. WHAT TYPE OF WORK WILL I DO?Elevator constructors undertake a range of critical tasks within their profession, encompassing the construction, inspection, testing, maintenance, alteration, and repair of various vertical transportation systems. This includes elevators, platform lifts, stairway chair lifts, escalators, moving walks, and dumbwaiters. It's essential to emphasize that elevator constructors carry out these responsibilities under demanding conditions, often working at considerable heights and in close proximity to exposed electrical contacts, as well as the moving components such as sheaves and cables. Their dedication to safety and precision is paramount in ensuring the reliable operation of these essential conveyance systems. To commence your journey towards becoming a union elevator constructor, start by visiting the website for the National Elevator Industry Education Program (NEIEP). On their website, you'll find comprehensive information, including a list of all the IUEC locals that are currently accepting applications for new apprentices. It's crucial to note that NEIEP is a federal program, and it is imperative to adhere strictly to all the instructions provided on their website. No exceptions will be made, as following the guidelines is an integral part of the apprenticeship application process.
